My sister and I grew up reading Archie Comics…recently I’ve had this new appreciation for them and keep browsing through the books everytime I pass them at the bookstore.
In our childhood we had this habit of assigning ourselves to characters we liked…for instance, when watching Disney movies I would prefer to be Belle of Beauty and the Beast, while Jackie wanted to be Mulan. When we played Barbies, I would be Skipper (or Ken, only cause she made me) while she would be Barbie. When reading Archie comics, I would be Betty while she would be Veronica. I don’t know if adopting these roles helped shape who we are today, or if we chose those characters because we related to them, but somehow Jackie and I ended up a lot like those make-believe people we loved so much.
I miss running down to the playroom with her to play paperdolls for hours on end….if only life could be that simple.
I hope that my sister is referring to my tendency to like clothing and not hoards of men when she says I turned out like Veronica!
Seriously, though, I miss those days as well. My childhood would not have been nearly as fun or amazing as it was without my sister who is still my best friend. We played tons of games and had a great time together. Although we don’t play with paper dolls anymore (we’ve moved to shopping instead), she’s still my partner in crime!
