After I walked in the door last night, Brandon ran up to me and told me the following:

He fixed the washing machine.
He vacuumed and steam-cleaned the carpets.
He put a load of dishes in the dishwasher.
He organized some of his DVDs.

You have no idea the relief and gratitude I felt. We were down to our last towel because of that damn washing machine. SCARY TIMES GUYS.

P.S. We had been arguing on the phone as I was driving home about whether I should grab pizza or Thai food for dinner. He wanted pizza. I wanted Thai. So I made an executive decision and got Thai. You cannot even imagine the guilt trips that were laid upon my head last night. “Guess you should have gotten me pizza since I fixed the washing machine…”

It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut! I do the same thing. I’ll find an outfit I really like (usually all-black) and I’ll wear it to death—tricking myself that changing up the jewelry is enough to make it “new.”

But with spring on the way, it’s the perfect time to add some fun and affordable pieces to your wardrobe.

Here are my suggestions:

Forever 21 “3Q” Jacket, $27 - Inexpensive and a good layering piece for chilly spring mornings. You can wear over dresses, tunics, with dress pants for work—really versatile for a great price.
Xhilaration Smock Dress, $20 - You can accessorize this so easily! Add a cardigan or a belt; some bangles and a long necklace; throw on some tights and boots. Tons of options!
Old Navy Stripe Tees, $10 - These come in about six different color combinations and are such a steal at $10. The color is a nifty twist on the navy-and-white striped tees you are seeing everywhere right now.
BDG Medium Wash Jeggings, $40 - Medium blue denim washes are huge for spring (bye, bye dark wash!) and pair up really well with the pastels that are hitting store shelves too. Plus, it doesn’t get much more comfy than a pair of jeggings.
Charlotte Russe Peep-Toe Platforms, $33 - Clogs and clog variations are, for some reason, a big spring trend. I love how these take the clog trend and make it sexy. You can wear them with your jeggings!
Steve Madden Leopard Flats, $40 - I have a pair of leopard flats that I wear all the time. They are a surprisingly versatile print and look equally adorable with a dress as they do with a great pair of skinny jeans.

I hope this helps you break out of your rut! Remember, there is nothing wrong with a signature look—sticking with what you like and adding fun little bursts of color or trendiness is the best way to keep your wardrobe updated.

Gold is kind of subjective—there are warmer tones, lighter tones, more metallic tones, etc.—so I found a variety of golds under $80 and in your heel height requirement.

I found two similar dresses and they are both fairly affordable, depending on what you plan on wearing the dress to!

(Didn’t you love Zooey’s wardrobe in that movie? To die for.)

Here’s what I found:

(Left) Maggy London Chiffon Dress, $62 (from $160)
(Right) Donna Morgan Strapless Dress, $140

Both dresses retain elements of Zooey’s vintage dress (the neckline on the left one, the color of the right one), but if I had to choose—I’d say the Donna Morgan has more of the overall feel of the dress from the film.

Produce excellent work efficiently and never do just enough to fly under the radar.

You want loyal friends?

Be a friendly person to them.

You want to spend money on yourself?

You have to make that money first.

You want to lose weight?

You have to put some serious effort into it, much as it may suck and much as you may hate every single minute.

You want to be well-respected?

You have to treat everyone politely and with decency, no matter how much you may not want to.

You want people to smile at you on the street?

You better smile at them first.

You cannot expect the universe to fulfill your every wish in exchange for complacency and wishful thinking. It’s become unfashionable to pursue a successful existence through hard work—even if that hard work is not your “passion.” Our generation has seen people get lucky doing what they are passionate about. What they don’t see is the drive, hard work, late nights and general crap that exists behind it. “Living the dream” is not so apt a description as “working the dream.” No one is going to hand you the perfect life without a catch.

As a future parent, I hope to show my children the same thing that my parents told me: hard work and dedication pay off every time. It may not be immediate, but you will reap the rewards of never giving less than you are capable of.

As I turn 23 and my marriage reaches its one-year anniversary, I have never been more proud of my husband, my family and myself.

Trust Company : The War Is Over

I was listening to Brandon’s iPod in the car this morning and this song came on. It was playing in Brandon’s car when we went out on our first date in 2005. It makes me super happy and nostalgic every time I hear it, even if it isn’t the most—uhh—romantic song in the world. For example, a sampling of the lyrics: The anger I keep for you/The bitter lessons I will keep for me. True love!

P.S. Back when I ran (before a doctor told me to stop), this was my go-to running song. I could knock out six and a half minute miles with it.

Well, I don’t know about this infinite wisdom stuff, but I did my best!

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a huge fan of off-the-shoulder shirts. I think the Kardashians pull it off because they are the Kardashians, but there’s just something about these shirts that irk me.

However, if you must wear, I’d dress it down with leggings or skinnies and a cute pair of flats.

(My favorite is the shirt above on the right—cute for summer with a pair of leggings and sandals.)

Don’t get it taken up! I love the length and it looks great on you!

If you want to dress it down, here’s what I’d do:

Add a casual cardigan or shrug
Wear a long necklace
Throw on some sandals or flip-flops

P.S. I love that you chose to wear something like this for your prom a few years ago. Clearly your sense of style was ahead of its time and now you can look back on your pictures and breathe a sigh of relief that you did not show up in some satin contraption. :)

Here’s the story—and a warning to all of you looking for dogs.

We purchased both Molly and Milo from a dog store chain in DC/MD. We knew all the stories and threats regarding pet stores and puppy mills, but we did our research online and called up the stores and were assured that the dogs only came from local breeders. We even saw paperwork and certificates to corroborate this.

Lo and behold, after purchasing Milo (our second dog), we consulted our papers and did a bit more sleuthing. From the time we purchased Molly to the time we purchased Milo, a big news story had broke and it was discovered that this pet store chain did indeed receive their dogs from puppy mills in the midwest.

We were heartbroken—I hate that I helped support an industry that I am so patently against. Horrible.

Lessons learned here: never trust a pet retail environment—even if they have paperwork and certificates that look official.

You are completely correct in that going to a breeder is one of the best ways to buy a pure-bred dog, but have you ever considered a Papillon rescue organization?

Brandon and I have said many times that if we had known what we know now, we would have adopted from a Papillon rescue. (Also, if you don’t have your heart set on a certain breed, please visit your local animal shelter!)

However, hindsight is 20/20 and I am certainly thankful for our two loving, wonderful, sweet dogs. It just makes me nauseated to think about where they came from and where their brothers and sisters may be now. Sometimes it makes me tear up. I don’t like to think about that.
