I am desperately in search of something that may not exist (I feel like I've exhausted the internet): a sleeveless/tank strap black maxi dress with a scoop neck and a t-back (preferably twisted). I've got the world's shortest legs and longest torso so I'd like something not terribly fitted that I can cinch with a belt to give the illusion of longer legs. I would appreciate any advice you can give!

Phew! I may have exhausted the Internet too. I don’t think I found something that fits EXACTLY what you want. But, I did find a few options for you that might work:

This ASOS maxi ($112) is probably the closest to your criteria. I’m not sure how tall you are, but the model is 5’10”, so it might be just the right length on you.

If you’re not completely married to the idea of black, this purple dress from Urban Outfitters ($80) might be a good option.

Jen’s Pirate Booy T&B Coastal dress might be pretty darn close to what you want, save for the back not being twisted. It’s $146.

Monrow’s t-back dress ($76) may be a little more clingy and strappy than you’d like.

I’m sorry I couldn’t find something perfect, but I hope you like one of these! :)

Like this maxi (and its interesting bodice) by Local Celebrity, marked down to $79 (from $121). Still available in size XS/S.

I always get one question per summer from someone who needs to find a “tropical” print dress to wear to a casual themed wedding and they can’t find one that’s not a sarong. If that is you this summer, this Mango dress ($69.99) is a good option.

On another note: finding a pair of slouchy denim shorts that aren’t Daisy Dukes but don’t look sloppy can be tricky, but I’m liking the looks of Mango’s $39.99 pair above right. (The styling is perfect too.)

This Target t-shirt maxi is a steal at $20 and is also available in teal. I like casual maxis like these for everyday errands or quick dinners during the summer.

As a side note: I’ve long loved Target because I could size up and get a maxi at the perfect length. (Out of all mass market retailers, Target’s maxis are the longest I’ve tried.) When I bought a few maxi dresses there a couple weeks ago, I noticed that they’d mostly standardized the skirt length for all sizes. (XS was about an inch shorter on a few styles.) That made me nervous, but after trying a few on, I’m happy to report that the length on some of them was actually too long for me (a few others were a tad too short, but nothing drastic). This is good news if you’re tall!

Scandalous and basically unwearable, but whoa—pretty. (Nasty Gal, $155) Could be made to work with a bandeau bra like this (Hanky Panky), or this (American Apparel), or this (Fleur’t).
